The Influence of Using TI-84 Calculators with Programs on Algebra I High Stakes Examinations
Spencer, Misty
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Delta State University
The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a significant difference in scores on the Mississippi Algebra I SATP2 when one group was allowed to use programs and the other group was not allowed to use programs on TI-84 calculators. An additional purpose of the study was also to determine if there was a significant difference in the scores when comparing the ethnicity of the participants. This study was conducted at a Central Mississippi high school and the participants included 222 students who were allowed to use programs and 183 students who were not allowed to use programs on the TI-84 calculators. The participants in each group were comparable by grade level, gender, and ethnicity. The results of this causal-comparative study indicated there was a difference in the overall scores when programs were used (n = 222, M = 655.03, SD = 7.864) and when no programs were used (n = 183, M = 657.74, SD = 9.68) conditions; t(3.148) = 0.136, p = 0.02. The students had higher scores on the Mississippi Algebra I SATP2 when programs on the TI-84 calculators were not allowed. The two-way ANOVA revealed little or no statistically significant interaction between ethnicity and use of programs. The findings of this study indicated that mathematics teachers should refrain from allowing students to use programs on calculators.
