Impact of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program on a Middle School Environment
Purugulla, Vijay
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Piedmont College
This mixed methods research study sought to find if the implementation of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) would reduce incidences of bullying in a suburban Atlanta middle school. Data was collected and compared over a two year period with Year 1 data representing pre-implementation of the OBPP. Discipline records associated with bullying, in-school suspension rates, and results of the Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire (OBVQ) were used to assess effectiveness of the OBPP in reducing incidences of bullying. Additionally, teachers were surveyed to assess program fidelity. Results of this study supported current research on bullying prevention programs. The use of the OBPP at the research middle school did increase bullying awareness, but did not decrease bullying incidences. Bullying related discipline increased across grade levels; and as a result, in-school suspensions also increased after implementation of the OBPP. OBVQ student survey results indicated older students (8th graders) were more inclined to participate in bullying than younger students (7th graders), even after implementation of the OBPP. Using a fully anchored rating scale, teachers overwhelmingly responded the bullying prevention program made no real difference in the climate of the school. Additionally, in open-ended responses, teachers' criticisms for the program focused primarily on the lack of administrative support and age-appropriate materials.
