The MTA PLATO-based evaluation system, which has been implemented by a consortium of schools of medical technology, is designed to be general-purpose, modular, data-driven, and interactive, and to accommodate other national and local item banks. The system provides a comprehensive interactive item-banking system in conjunction with online student management, testing, and analysis or computer grading. Thus a large (up to 16,000) set of test items may be drawn on by specific instructors in creating tests, which may be delivered either online, within the testing component of the system, or printed for off-line delivery. CERL PLATO users and others who have made special arrangements may use the system, providing they have a project and a project director who can access, edit, and direct the project. Existing banks have been developed primarily in the health sciences, but use is not restricted, with applications in medical technology, pharmacology, microbiology, biochemistry, and small projects in other disciplines. The addition of permanent data storage capability will allow an instructor to run an item analysis on a given online test. (LMM)
