Pitfalls Lurk for School-Project Chiefs
Sack, Joetta L.
Education Week, v23 n29 p1, 16-17 Mar 2004
This paper, Part 3 of a three-part series examining the boom in the construction and renovation of K-12 schools and the continuing challenges that communities face in getting the facilities their students and educators need, describes the demanding career aspects of school administrators who oversee construction projects. Building schools requires not only architects, contractors, and facilities managers to work together, but also several different, and often competing, parties--the school board, the superintendent, other school administrators, teachers, parents, and community members. Last-minute changes by officials often result in project delays and increased costs. Hiring capable architects, contractors, and consultants is a good first step in avoiding lengthy delays, but the ultimate goal is to have good communication between school officials and builders. Listening to as many factions as possible is vitally important for the architects and builders, states Michael E. Hall, an architect and chief marketing officer for Fanning/Howey Associates Inc., a Celina, Ohio-based architectural firm that specializes in school design. Fanning/Howey Associates has designed a program for districts and architects, called "Steps: Building Consensus One Step at a Time" that helps guide the process of working with school districts to build new schools.
