Simkins, Michael; Cole, Karen; Tavalin, Fern; Means, Barbara
This book discusses enhancing student achievement through project-based learning with multimedia. Chapter 1 describes project-based multimedia learning. Chapter 2 presents a multimedia primer, including the five basic types of media objects (i.e., images, text, sound, motion, and interactivity). Chapter 3 addresses making a real-world connection, including connecting through student interests, student experiences, and significant issues, improving the real world, relating to clients, interacting with assessors and people who know, learning adult work and life skills, creating a body of work, and creating images of the future. Chapter 4 covers defining and planning a multimedia learning project, including goals and objectives, decision-making, collaboration, necessary resources, and measuring what students learn. Chapter 5 discusses implementing the project, including the following stages of a typical project: before the project starts; introducing the project; learning the technology; preliminary research and planning; concept design and storyboarding; first draft production; assessing, testing, and finalizing presentations; concluding activities; and total class time. Chapter 6 examines the roles of assessment, including using assessment activities to address developing expectations and standards, catalyzing project improvement and learning, and compiling and disseminating evidence of student learning. Chapter 7 discusses the evolving roles of teachers and students. Chapter 8 addresses finding support for the project, and Chapter 9 looks at building systemic support.
