This article presents the author's reaction to Catherine Marshall and Michael Ward's article on research on social justice and training for leadership. The author read Marshall and Ward's article carefully, making mental notes in preparation for his reaction. In the midst of his reflection about the study, the author suddenly realized that he was trying to sort out some of his own conflicts and dilemmas. The author's heuristic knowledge was an obstacle rather than a tool. Initially it was difficult to identify, but it became obvious that the author was totally immersed in a "meta-reaction." He was reacting to his reaction about the study. "Reacting to his reaction" served as a tool or strategy for maintaining a heightened level of sensitivity to the author's biases and his initial cynicism. This strategy, coupled with what the author knows of Catherine Marshall's lifelong commitment to social justice work, mitigated the impact of his biases. Here, the author first presents a reaction to his reaction, then proceeds to provide a critique and reaction to Marshall and Ward's study.
