MICA, Managed Instruction with Computer Assistance: Level Five. An Outline of the System's Capabilities.
Lorenz, Thomas B.; And Others
Computer technology has been used since 1972 in the Madison, Wisconsin, public schools to control the flow of information required to support individualized instruction. Madison's computer-managed instruction system, MICA (Managed Instruction with Computer Assistance), operates interactively within individualized instruction programs to provide constant monitoring of student progress. The central principle underlying MICA is that teachers should be 100% free of clerical and non-instructional tasks. MICA is designed to service any type of instruction selected by the school and can handle a broad spectrum of commercial and home-grown curricula. Through five generations of development, its designers have built improved systems using educational insights gained from operating the system's predecessor for one year. The capabilities and options available through level five of the MICA system, implemented in 1975-76, are outlined. (Author/PF)
