What's New with Newborn Screening
Exceptional Parent, v38 n8 p34-35 Aug 2008
Newborn screening is the process of testing and screening newborns shortly after birth for certain, potentially dangerous, conditions and/or impairments--conditions that include everything from inborn errors of metabolism and other genetic disorders to hearing impairment. Early detection through newborn screening is paramount, often allowing the opportunity for intervention, which can lessen or even eliminate the effects of genetic disorders. "Exceptional Parent" has long championed the expansion, adoption, and development of universal newborn screening, and this article provides ongoing updates on these procedures.
