Getting to Outcomes: A Best Practice Process to Help Schools Achieve Desired Outcomes
Maras, Melissa A.; Wandersman, Abe; Splett, Joni Williams; Flaspohler, Paul; Weist, Mark
Communique, v41 n4 p4, 6, 8 Dec 2012
This article describes Getting to Outcomes (GTO), a 10-step framework for accountability designed to facilitate effective implementation of evidence-based programs and improvement of home-grown practices (Getting to Outcomes and GTO are trademarks registered by the University of South Carolina and RAND; Wandersman, Imm, Chinman, & Kaftarian, 1999, 2000). GTO represents a framework of best practice process with emerging empirical evidence on the benefits of using it to plan, implement, and evaluate evidence-based practices (EBPs) (Chinman et al., 2005; Flaspohler, Meehan, Maras, & Keller, 2012). GTO was introduced by Godber (2008) in "Best Practices in School Psychology V." Expanding upon Godber's (2008) introduction to GTO, in this article the authors describe the GTO framework, the use of GTO in diverse settings with a variety of content foci, and the growing research base supporting the use of GTO with evidence-based programs. They then describe potential applications of GTO for school psychologists for improving student outcomes at the individual, group, classroom, and school-wide levels. They conclude with a brief discussion of implications for training and next steps regarding dissemination and further research. (Contains 1 table and 1 figure.)
