With the constant concern over violence in schools, school officials are looking for ways to head off this potential problem and to better assure a safe environment for all students. One way that has become popular is the implementation of peer mediation programs where students assist other students in learning how to deal with conflict through non-violent means. A focus of these programs is at the middle school level. A wealth of information is available on initial training of middle school peer mediators. However, once the initial training is complete, a new challenge begins; the continuing education of peer mediators. This manuscript discusses one such peer mediation program that incorporates a continuing education component at a middle school in the southeastern United States. Through this program, students develop and enhance their peer mediation skill. In addition to the initial training, students receive feedback on prior mediation sessions, learn principles of adolescent development and receive continuing education. Early results of this mediation program indicate initial success in reducing violent and disruptive actions which result in student suspensions. (Contains 2 tables.)
