Standard Implications: Alaskans Reflect on a Movement To Change Teaching.
Calkins, Annie, Ed.; Christian, Scott, Ed.
In this anthology, rural Alaskan English teachers in the Bread Loaf Rural Teacher Network describe their experiences implementing new state education standards while continuing their commitment to learner-centered and place-based practice. The book presents narratives about teaching grounded in knowledge and understanding of students and communities, makes the distinction between standards and standardization, and celebrates small-scale learning communities where the resourcefulness of teachers is a moving force for culturally sensitive, standards-based teaching. Following a foreword by Dixie Goswami and an introduction by Andrea Abernethy Lunsford, the contents are "Standards in a Middle School Language Arts Program: One Student, One Writing Assignment" (Scott Christian);"Poetry in Motion" (Eileen Clark); "Incorporating Community and Environment in Teaching" (Fargo Kesey); "Avid Video" (Joe Koon); "Karina: A Personal Perspective on High Stakes, Standards and Growth" (Tom McKenna); "An Essential Idea" (Geri McLeod); "Muddying the Waters" (Karen Mitchell); "Listening to Voices: Interacting with Community and Students" (Maria Offer); "Elegiac Voices: Students Join a Poetic Tradition" (Prudence Plunkett); "Beyond the Lines: Six-Trait Reading Works on Many Levels" (Sondra Porter); "Writing from the Heart: Peer Revision on the Web" (Rosie Roppell); "Eye Opening Online Interactions" (Sheri Skelton); "Humbug! The 'Heart' of Conversation" (Patricia A. Truman); and "'Pass the Poetry, Please': Real Learning in Rural Alaska" (Tammy Vanwyhe). (SV)
