Issues pertaining to private higher education are considered in five articles. In "Toward a Philosophy of Higher Education," Ben C. Fisher suggests a need for greater unity of purpose, more attention to producing good citizens, and a sense of the importance of religious values. The maintenance of a strong dual system of education, both at the secondary and university levels, is recommended. In "The Independent Institution of Higher Education in the Eighties," Earl J. McGrath addressed the following issues: opportunities for private institutions in the 1980s, the element of size, marketing the university, serving students of varying academic ability, the need for more effective general education, the special functions of the church colleges, and governmental support of private institutions. In "The Future of Higher Education from the Perspective of a Corporate/Foundation Executive," John T. McCarty considers the mission of a university, how business can help private institutions and their interrelationship, and gift tax credits. In "The Personal Challenges of the College Presidency," Hudson T. Armerding suggests that one of the major challenges of the college presidency is to perceive one's calling and to identify in that perception a vision for the institution. In "The New Public Interest Law Firms: Don Quixotes for Private Education," Maxwell A. Miller reviews recent trends that suggest the existence of a government by judiciary in the United States and examines the relevance of public interest law to educators. Among these areas are the following: private education's struggle against government, and President Reagan's pledge to decrease, if not eliminate, the Department of Education. A chart listing federal programs that affect the policies and procedures of colleges and administrative requirements is included. (SW)
