This report contains highlights from a seminar on teenage pregnancy prevention programs. Comments by these panelists are summarized: Kristin Moore, senior research associate, Child Trends, Inc.; Dennis McBride, consultant for the Adolescent Family Life Office; Susan Newcomer, consultant for the National Institute of Child Health and Development; and Karen Pittman, director, Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Policy Division, Children's Defense Fund. These topics, discussed at the seminar, are summarized: (1) trends in adolescent pregnancy and the lack of a clear idea of what works in pregnancy prevention; (2) problems in program evaluation and efforts to increase quality evaluation; (3) difficulties of teenage pregnancy programs in producing measurable results; and (4) life options programs which offer a comprehensive solution that combines traditional methods of prevention (sexuality education and contraception) with improvements in education, job-training, and community development. A background briefing report is also included which contains information about selected trends, determinants of teenage pregnancy, goals and types of pregnancy prevention programs, evaluation of teenage pregnancy programs, sex education programs, family planning programs, life options programs, family involvement as a pregnancy prevention strategy, and the federal role in prevention of teenage pregnancy.
