The Seven Principles in Action: Improving Undergraduate Education.
Hatfield, Susan Rickey, Ed.
This book contains 10 essays on the Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education that include extensive, specific examples of how the principles have been applied at many colleges and universities. It also includes faculty, institutional and student inventories for self-assessment under the Seven Principles. Following an introduction, a preface by Martin Nemko, and an introduction by Zelda F. Gamson the essays are: (1) "Good Practice Encourages Student-Faculty Contact (Judith A. Sturnick and Keith J. Conners); (2) "Cooperative Learning Communities (Tim Hatfield and Susan Rickey Hatfield); (3) "What is Active Learning?" (David G. Brown and Curtis W. Ellison); (4) "Prompt Feedback" (David Benson, Lu Mattson, and Les Adler); (5) "Time on Task" (Stuart Vorkink); (6)"Effective Undergraduate Education Communicates High Expectations" (Robert A. Scott and Dorothy Echols Tobe); (7) "Good Practice Respects Diverse Talents and Ways of Learning (Russell M. Lidman, and others); (8) "Indicators of Educational Effectiveness" (James Reynolds). The ninth section contains the inventories for good practice. The final two sections contain "How To Choose a College" (Martin Nemko) and "How To Test-Drive a College" (Martin Nemko) which are both designed to assist high school students and their parents in selecting a college. Most essays contain references. (JB)
