Mathematics Teaching Incorporating Micromath, n195 p19-22 Mar 2006
In this article, the author reports on the League for the Exchange of Commonwealth Teachers (LECT) study visit to Budapest. The main aims for the visit were as follows: (1) to widen their knowledge of the interactive teaching of mathematics; (2) to gain an insight into how colleagues can develop pupils' curiosity, interest and enthusiasm for mathematics through independent activities, investigations and discussions; (3) to gain an insight into the education system of another country and allow comparison with and reflection upon their own, through discussions with other mathematics specialists from different key stages; and (4) to develop their own self-confidence and self-worth and to develop expertise in the teaching of mathematics. One year past, their planning now also reflects what they saw in Budapest. The initials HS (Hungarian Style) on their plans indicates a short session of whole class teaching-from-the-front with all the children working together and discussing an example or two with the teacher. The children now ask more questions and seek clarification more readily and teachers can address misconceptions before they become entrenched. Furthermore, the author recommends a LECT overseas study visit to any teacher since it is an opportunity to compare and contrast cultures that broadens one's awareness of different teaching strategies and provides opportunities to reflect on good practice.
