Synthesizing Family, Career, and Culture: A Model for Counseling in the Twenty-First Century.
Evans, Kathy M., Ed.; Rotter, Joseph C., Ed.; Gold, Joshua M., Ed.
Career and work constitute a major portion of most people's lives; families have an impact on people's careers; and their culture determines a great deal about how they approach family and work. The family counseling, career, and multicultural literature has given little attention to these dynamics. This text provides a multifaceted framework for integrating a client's family, career, and cultural issues into the counseling process. Chapters include: (1) "The Influence of Family, Career, and Culture on Individuals" (Joseph C. Rotter and Kathy M. Evans); (2) "Out of the Box: A Model for Counseling in the Twenty-First Century" (Joshua M. Gold, Joseph C. Rotter, and Kathy M. Evans); (3) "Synthesizing Career and Family Theories: Relevant Issues" (Patricia Murray, Laurie Williamson, Kimberly Boudrot, Erika Reents, Tamara Roberts, and Kathy M. Evans); (4) "Strategies for Counseling Family One: The Vargas Family" (Nancy Ochs and Kathy M. Evans); (5) "Strategies for Counseling Family Two: The Rokutani Family" (Kim Snow and Jon Carlson); (6) "Strategies for Counseling Family Three: The Robinson Family" (Victoria Foster, Karen Eriksen, and Garrett McAuliffe); (7) "Research in Context" (Lisa D. Hawley, Jane Goodman, and Mary Shaieb); and (8) "Integration of Counseling Standards" (Marty Jencius). (Contains 3 figures, 2 tables, and 328 references.) (JDM)
