Integrated Studies in the Middle Grades: "Dancing Through Walls."
Stevenson, Chris, Ed.; Carr, Judy F., Ed.
A group of middle level teachers collaborated in designing some innovative teaching units about topics already known to be inherently interesting to their students. The students' interests were integrated with existing curriculum goals. This book presents the teachers' insights on this project and includes detailed examples of integrated curriculum units, along with concrete examples, planning guides, and practical advice. Fifteen chapters follow the introduction, "An Invitation to Dance" (Chris Stevenson and Judy F. Carr). The chapters are: (1) "Goals for Integrated Studies" (Chris Stevenson and Judy F. Carr); (2) "Integrated Studies Planning Framework" (Chris Stevenson and Judy F. Carr); (3) "The Big HooHa: Toward Sound Mind and Body" (Peter Straub); (4) "A Self-Study" (Janet Bellavance and Susan Girardin); (5) "On the Road Again" (Mary Heins); (6) "Richmond Four Corners" (Susan Girardin); (7) "A View from the Park" (Cristal J. Brown and Maggie Eaton); (8) "Adopt a Business" (Carol Smith and others); (9) "Weather Watch" (Judith Steffens and others); (10) "Go With the Flow" (Ken Bergstrom); (11) "Climb Every Mountain" (Ann Reames and others); (12) "The Big Alpha Circus" (Carol Smith and others); (13) "Inventions" (Nancy Phillips and others); (14) "Garbology" (Jane Vossler and Terry Moore); and (15) "Carved in Stone" (Patricia Stevens and others). The book concludes with "Epilogue: Daring to Dance...or Not" (Chris Stevenson and Judy F. Carr). (TJQ)
