Phipps, Maurice, Ed.; Hayashi, Aya, Ed.
Wilderness Education Association
The Wilderness Education Association (WEA) helps people enjoy and protect our nation's most precious resource: Our wilderness areas. They have been training and certifying outdoor leaders around the world for nearly 30 years, teaching students safely and effectively to lead groups in the outdoors without harming the environment. In addition, working with national conservation groups and government agencies, the WEA educates the general public in how to appreciate and conserve the wilderness through special curricula and public service information campaigns. This document presents the proceedings of the Wilderness Education Association's 2006 National Conference on Outdoor Leadership. The following papers comprise these proceedings: (1) 2006 Paul Petzoldt Award Lecture (Christine Cashel); (2) Basics of Caving (Nate Clark); (3) The Life Significance of the Wilderness Solo & Strategies for Intentional Solo Design (Brad Daniel, Andrew J. Bobilya, and Kenneth R. Kalisch); (4) Designing a WEA course using collaboration (Marni Goldenberg); (5) Diversity: an obstacle or an opportunity (Aya Hayashi and Jackson Wilson); (6) Frank Lupton's Magic Rope (Frank Lupton); (7) Assessing the development of environmental virtue in WEA program participants (Bruce Martin); (8) Taking over a university outdoor recreation program. Where do you begin? (Tim Mertz and Ivan Bartha); (9) Using a PERT chart for planning expedition courses (Maurice Phipps); (10) Does a bear sh** in the woods? Yes, but we should pack it out! (Lara Usinowicz); (11) Developing your professional portfolio based on eight core competencies (Mark Wagstaff, Christine Cashel, and Bruce Martin); and (12) Lost in Translation: Linguistic and cultural diversity in outdoor education (Guan-Jang Wu and Aiko Yoshino).
