In 1986, the Keep Youth in School Project, a joint venture of the Catholic University of America, the Family and Child Services of Washington, D.C., the District of Columbia Department of Human Services, and the Marriott Corporation, began a 3-year research and demonstration program to develop a practice model for helping minority foster children between the ages of 12 and 15 who were at high risk of dropping out. Specific objectives of the project were to help the youth attend school regularly, improve their academic performance, enhance work skills, and form positive attitudes toward school, work, and self. Project strategies included peer mentorship (involving Catholic University students with at risk youth); an employment training and incentive program; involvement of primary caretakers; and social support. Project findings, based on data collected from 87 students through surveys, tests, observations, personal interviews, and analysis of grades, showed significant gains in grades and attendance.
