Sex Education: A Success in Our Social-Studies Class
Michner, James A.
Clearing House: A Journal of Educational Strategies, Issues and Ideas, v79 n5 p210-214 May-Jun 2006
Whenever secondary schools permit students to participate in the determination of the social studies curriculum, sex education is almost always demanded. Adolescents are often-times more deeply interested in this question than most people suspect, for courtship and marriage relationships are vital problems. Because many students have been asking the schools to give them units on sex education, the authors have developed an experimental situation in the Secondary School of the Colorado State College of Education that intends to answer the following: (1) Do students want sex education training in social studies? (2) What procedures are best adapted to teaching these subjects? (3) What is the attitude of parents regarding the teaching of sex and marriage problems in the public schools? Based on the feedback they received from the participants, the authors conclude the following: (1) The need is both felt and great; (2) Boys and girls should be taught in non-segregated groups; (3) Sex education should probably be taught in the junior high school. Marriage should probably be discussed later; (4) Techniques in which open discussion dominates are probably best; (5) The scientific spirit should prevail in all discussion; (6) Men and women should cooperate in leading the class; (7) A voluntary basis for entering the class should be maintained; (8) Opposing, correlating, and substantiating viewpoints should be presented; and (9) Most parents will probably thank the school for offering such instruction.
