Now entering its eighth year, TheatreLink, Manhattan Theater Club's Internet-based distance-learning project remains the most exciting and most challenging initiative. MTC's Education Program had existed for seven years (since 1989 to be exact) before it started TheatreLink. During that early period MTC created an array of programs, all of them characterized by a mixture of hands-on theater workshops and attendance at MTC productions, all of them serving New York area schools. Its Core Program brings high school students to matinees as the culmination of an in-class preparatory process, co-designed and co-taught by Teaching Artists and classroom teachers. It also developed a playwriting residency initiative, teacher training programs, a family matinee series, and several other programs. MTC is far from alone in these endeavors; for decades multitudes of cultural organizations in New York and around the country have also been creating high-quality arts education programs to serve the schools and their communities. In this article, the author discusses how MTC opens up its successful internet playwriting project.
