A Civics Lesson
Farrell, Elizabeth F.
Chronicle of Higher Education, v53 n14p A41 Nov 2006
This article describes the meeting between Mr. Eugene M. Lang and about 30 other higher-education leaders in midtown Manhattan to discuss the future of Project Pericles. Project Pericles Inc., is the organization founded in 2001 by the 87-year-old multimillionaire and renowned philanthropist. The organization aimed to promote civic involvement not only among college students but also faculty, staff members, and town residents to become model citizens. Mr. Lang made bold predictions about the group, describing its creation as a "seminal event in the history of higher education"; a force that could revolutionize academe. Members say the group has made significant strides, particularly in persuading faculty members to change their course offerings. Yet the project's impact on students is difficult to quantify.
