Disaster Preparedness: Guidelines for School Nurses
Doyle, Janice; Loyacono, Thomas R.
National Association of School Nurses (NJ3)
These guidelines help school nurses understand their role in preparing for disasters and major emergencies. The guidelines are suitable for planning for a variety of emergency and disaster situations. Disaster Preparedness Guidelines for School Nurses is based on the four phases of disaster management as defined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA): mitigation, planning, response, and recovery. The four phases are recognized throughout the disaster preparedness community as the standard comprehensive approach to disaster management. These guidelines provide an overview of the school nurse's role in disaster preparedness, describe each phase of disaster management, and include a collection of tools to assist school nurses in becoming more involved in disaster planning in their school setting.
