Teachers Wanted: No Experience Necessary
Machado, Aileen Socarras
Childhood Education, v84 n5 p311 Ann 2008
As a private child care center owner, administrator, and teacher, the author has come across many issues that seem impossible to resolve or manage in positive ways. These issues have included adapting curricula, scheduling, budgeting, dealing with many different agencies, educating families, educating staff, and, among other countless issues, revealing to a parent that her child may have developmental delays. These issues may be familiar to many other owners, administrators, or teachers. In this article, the author discusses the most challenging task she has ever had to deal with--teacher retention. Teachers leave for very specific reasons, and none involve their being unhappy at the center. She then asks herself, as many other owners and administrators must, what else she needs to do to keep quality teachers in the profession and caring for the youngest of the children.
