Following an analysis of the task of transcribing as practiced in a health facility, this study guide was developed to teach the knowledge and skills required of a medical transcriber. The medical record department was identified as a major occupational area, and a task inventory for medical records was developed and used as a basis for a questionnaire distributed to 48 health care facilities. Based on the results, instructional units for teaching medical terminology were developed, which include sketches to illustrate the material and space for the student to fill in the answers to questions. This unit focuses on the musculoskeletal system. The 32 units include material on the: (1) skeletal system, (2) disorders of the skeletal system, and (3) muscle disorders. Included are 31 audio exercises for use with a cassette, 9 transcription exercises, and answers to the unit exercises. Related documents are announced as VT 015 917 and VT 015 918. (MU)
