MMC: Developing Communicative Competence in English as a Second Language.
Bruder, Mary Newton
This is a text intended for use with adult beginning classes in ESL in a 15-week intensive course. The major objective of the text is to develop communicative competence. Therefore, the structures are taught through mechanical drills, meaningful drills, and finally communicative drills, so that "teacher talk" is gradually diminished and "student talk" is increased. The text consists of 22 lessons. A dialogue presents in context the syntactical patterns and lexical items contained in the lesson. Following the dialogue, there is an outline of the patterns presented in each lesson, comprehension questions, a vocabulary list and drill patterns. The lesson ends with a summary dialogue and chart of the patterns in the lesson. Students are acquainted with features of language styles other than formal classroom style. (Author/AM)
