The Brazilian Integrated Environmental Policy and the Treaty
de Melo Diniz, Nilo Sergio
Convergence, v39 n4 p73-80 2006
The Brazilian Ministry of the Environment, directed by the Minister Marina Silva, recently awarded by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) with the "World Champion" prize. The four courses of the agency's direction are: (1) To enhance the National System of the Environment (SISNAMA); (2) To "mainstream" the environmental concerns into other sectors; (3) Transparency and social control; and (4) Sustainable development. One of the most significant programmes of the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment is the Environmental Education Program (PRONEA) developed in partnership with the Ministry of Education (MEC), which is essentially related to the Treaty on Environmental Education for Sustainable Societies and Global Responsibility. This article describes how PRONEA established the roots for Environmental Education all over Brazil and how it supported the activities related to the Treaty principles and commitment.
