It's PTA Showtime, Baby! Promoting Physical Activity among Parents and Children
Schilling, Tammy; Berg, Kim; Martin, Amanda Shoe; Martin, Gary; Lux, Karen
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v17 n6 p55-58 Nov 2006
In this article, the authors state, that to help children value and participate in regular physical activity, it is important that significant adults in their lives do the same. Furthermore, research has consistently shown that adults, particularly parents, influence children's participation in physical activity (e.g., Brustad, 1996; Freedson & Evenson, 1991; Frost, 2004), and the school environment is critical in educating parents regarding the importance of healthy, active lifestyles (Sothern, 2004). And one effective arena for doing this is through PTA (Parent Teacher Association) programs. In this article, the authors discuss their four main goals in planning and implementing their own PTA events and their strategies in accomplishing these goals.
