Student Profile, Fall 1977 to Fall 1986. Historical Profiles Project.
California Community Colleges, Sacramento. Office of the Chancellor.
The tables and graphs presented in this report reflect changes in community college enrollments in California over the past 10 years (fall 1977 to fall 1986), as they have responded to fluctuations in the state's economy, available state revenues, and community college funding. First, an executive summary highlights the following trends over the 10-year period: (1) female enrollments increased, though male students consistently constituted a majority of full-time community college students; (2) enrollments declined among full-time students taking 12 or more units by 17.2%, while enrollments of students taking fewer than 6 units increased by 6.4%; (3) Black enrollments declined substantially since 1981, though 1986 saw an increase over the previous year in Black students enrolled; (4) enrollment of Hispanics and Asians increased by 43.6% and 86.2%, respectively, while enrollments among Whites and Blacks declined by 3.7% and 26.3%, respectively; (5) there has been a decline in the enrollment of recent high school graduates and other "traditional college age" students; and (6) declines in full-time younger students have resulted in the reduction of community college transfer students to the University of California and the California State University and Colleges. The bulk of the report consists of data tables and analyses focusing on enrollment trends by credit load, gender, age, ethnicity, and student level; transfers; participation rates; and degrees and awards.
