The fundamentals of motion picture photography are introduced with a physiological explanation for the illusion of motion in a film. Film stock formats and emulsions, camera features, and lights are listed and described. Various techniques of exposure control are illustrated in terms of their effects. Photographing action with a stationary or a moving camera is explained, as is the effect various lenses have on perspective. Editing techniques are demonstrated so that the action at the end of one shot will be matched to that at the start of the next shot. Various methods are presented for controlling the apparent flow of time in a film. Special visual effects are considered, including slow, fast, and reverse motion photography; single frame animation; and superimposed images. Suggestions are made for alleviating the problems that are caused by using non-actors in a film. Directions are given for recording, editing, and mixing sound. The process of preparing the picture and sound materials for the "first trial answer print" is explained. A sample script for a comic version of "Little Red Riding Hood" illustrates various low-budget techniques for producing a variety of effects and feelings in a film. (JY)
