The Principal as Professional Development Leader
Lindstrom, Phyllis H.; Speck, Marsha
Corwin Press
Individual teachers have the greatest effect on student performance. Principals, as professional development leaders, are in the best position to provide teachers with the professional development strategies they need to improve skills and raise student achievement. This book guides readers through a step-by-step process to formulate, implement, and evaluate long-term professional development. The authors simplify and focus the function of the principal as professional development leader by providing scenarios, processes, context, and content that principals can use to create an integrated, collaborative learning environment. Aligned with National Staff Development Council standards, this user-friendly resource includes: (1) Rubrics, worksheets, and surveys; (2) Professional development planners; (3) Sample forms for classroom visits and observations; (4) Calendars of professional development activities; and (5) Recommended readings and reflective questions. In order to improve learning for all students, this unique text provides the strategies, skills, and tools necessary to build the capacity of professional development within the school. The authors supply practical techniques for analyzing student achievement data, evaluating professional development plans, and achieving a culture of sustained improvement. Following a foreword by Dennis Sparks and a preface, this book presents six chapters: (1) What It Means to Be a Professional Development Leader; (2) The Principal as Builder: Building the Capacity of the Professional Learning Community; (3) The Principal as Designer: Developing Focus, Plans, and Resources; (4) The Principal as Implementer: Taking Action; (5) The Principal as Reflective Leader: Evaluating Results; and (6) The Principal as Change Agent: The Challenge for the Future. This book concludes with two resources; a list of references; and an index.
