Famous Presidents Unit, Third Grade.
Nowlin, Isabel
This teaching unit is composed of six parts: (1) content outline, (2) unit goals, (3) objectives, (4) activities, (5) evaluation plan, and (6) bibliography. The content of the unit centers on the lives of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Specifically it investigates what made these men exceptional heroes, and it differentiates between facts and legends. It reviews the early lives of both men, their early careers and presidencies. Unit goals address the content, and in addition, focus on building a historical time sequence, helping students appreciate the work of great people without feeling the need to believe tall tales, and develop an enjoyment in learning about the past. Specific behavioral objectives are keyed to unit goals and activities, which include nodifying the room environment for the study, a pretest of presidential knowledge, developing a definition of history, building personal time lines, making myths, developing the concept of President, viewing films and reading books on the lives of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, mapping, and performing a small play. The unit evaluation closely parallels the activities and is based on a point system. A 21-item annotated bibliography of teacher and student resources is appended. (JDH)
