Transition IV in Alabama: A Profile of Commitment. Proceedings of the Annual Statewide Conference on Transition (4th, Auburn, Alabama, January 1995).
Browning, Philip, Ed.
This proceedings document provides the texts of 23 presentations given at a conference in 1994 which focused on policies, materials, programs, and activities being implemented in Alabama to foster the successful transition of youth with disabilities to adult life. An initial paper compares the definition of transition developed by Andrew Halpern and adopted by the Council for Exceptional Children's Division of Career Development and Transition with the definition contained in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The following papers are then presented: (1) "Decatur's Community Transition Team in the Making" (Emily Amberson); (2) "Anniston's School to Work Transition Program" (Keith Dear et al.); (3) "Calhoun Community College's Project GATE" (Virginia H. Smith); (4)"Mobile's Transition Advisory Committee" (Ann Hilderbrand); (5) "UAB's Independent Living Skills for Transition" (Cynthia W. Jackson and Kathryn Purvis); (6) "Alabama's IEP + LCCE" (Mabrey Whetstone); (7) "Transition Services and Opportunities in Your Alabama Community" (Beverly Lavender et al.); (8) "Mobile's Joint IEP/ITP Meetings" (Ann Hilderbrand); (9) "U of A's Self-Advocacy for Students with Learning Disabilities" (Rhett Brandt); (10) "Mobile's Vocational Rehabilitation Services in Transition" (Ann Hilderbrand); (11) "A 'Group Action Planning' Cookbook for Families, Friends, and Professionals" (Ann P. Turnbull and Rutherford Turnbull, III); (12) "Group Action Planning as a Strategy of Moving from Old to New Horizons in Transitional Planning" (Ann P. Turnbull and Rutherford Turnbull, III); (13) "Inclusion: One Parent's Story" (Susan Statum); (14) "Problem Assessment of Family Involvement in Transition" (Rebecca Curtis et al.); (15) "Parent Involvement in Transition: A Multicultural Perspective" (Katherine Winchester and Phyllis Williams); (16) "Embracing Families in the Transition Planning Process: Perceptions and Expectations" (Vivian Larkin and Jackie Echols); (17) "Lessons Learned along the Bumpy Way" (Mike McClanahan); (18) "Rural-Based Programs for Transition from School to Adult Life" (Thomas Sherburne et al.); (19) "Social Skills: Transitioning Students with Mild Learning Handicaps" (Virginia Chance); (20) "Transition of Individuals Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing: A Literature Profile" (Linda Shumaker); (21) "Auburn's Master's Program in Special Education with an Emphasis in Secondary Education and Transition" (Caroline Dunn); (22) "Auburn's Undergraduate Rehabilitation Program with an Emphasis in Job Coaching" (Clarence Brown); and (23) "Distance Education in Transition: Another Auburn Training Strategy" (Philip Browning et al.). An annotated bibliography of 39 items on families in transition is provided. A list of conference participants and a cumulative index to the four conferences completes the proceedings. (DB)
