This paper shows that multiple sources of data reflecting educational progress may be used with relative ease to systematically, objectively, and accurately place students in selective educational programs, such as those funded under Chapter 1 of the Education Consolidation and Improvement Act, using readily available commercial microcomputer programs. The following process is outlined: (1) choosing types of information for selection; (2) obtaining the statistical data; (3) preparing the statistical data for analysis; (4) analyzing the data to determine relative need; (5) developing the composite score; and (6) analyzing the composite score using a commercially-available microcomputer spreadsheet program, including setting up the spreadsheet, developing the computational overlay, entering the computational formulas, entering the student data, and sorting the student lists. The following materials are appended: (1) a list of three references; (2) a student selection checklist used in Lake County (Florida); (3) an example of the student statistical data generated by the computer program; (4) instructions for setting up Lotus data files from a main frame computer; and (5) descriptions of seven technical reports that can be generated using the program.
