Organizational Management Handbook.
Haendle, Connie
A handbook on the organizational structure and management practices of the Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc. (LVA), is presented. An outline of LVA's structure and policies is presented as basic training for leaders before they begin the planning and operational phases. The activity of starting an affiliate is described with respect to interim board recruitment and training, surveying the community, needs assessment, community resources and sponsors, subprograms, interagency relationships, and first-year goal setting. Initiating the program involves recruiting sponsors, recruiting key volunteers and tutors, the first workshop, and drawing up affiliate by-laws. Fund raising, communication activities, inservice training, accountability measures, and planning for the next year are covered. Requirements and qualities of leaders and managers and voluntarism in general are discussed. Appended materials include the following: bibliography, student-tutor flow charts, LVA organizational chart, excerpt on proposal writing, Maine brochure, and glossary. (SW)
