The manual describes a procedure to assess to what extent a deaf-blind multiply handicapped student uses his residual hearing in the classroom. Six levels of auditory functioning (awareness/reflexive, attention/alerting, localization, auditory discrimination, recognition, and comprehension) are analyzed, and assessment activities are detailed for each level. For each activity, information is provided for expected child behavior, materials, and procedure. Included among 17 appendixes are a list of calibrated toys; information on sound levels in different environments, causes of sensori-neural loss, an analysis of relative intensity of vowels and consonants, a discussion of educational implications of hearing loss, a parent's guide for hearing aid trouble shooting, and a review of formal auditory assessments and their applicability to deaf-blind children.
