The Big Fish
DeLisle, Rebecca; Hargis, Jace
Education, v125 n4 p702 Sum 2005
The Killer Whale, Shamu jumps through hoops and splashes tourists in hopes for the big fish, not because of passion, desire or simply the enjoyment of doing so. What would happen if those fish were obsolete? Would this killer whale be able to find the passion to continue to entertain people? Or would Shamu find other exciting activities to do throughout the day? Like Shamu, students in today's classrooms are driven by a similar extrinsic motivation as the big fish, which we call grades. The big fish that we provide for our students consists of a grading system, which praises and reinforces the almighty GPA. Emphasis is not placed on how much students enjoy learning or the passion and desire that they have in their heart to gain more knowledge or even how well they actually learn. What is most important is who can reach the biggest fish, regardless of the nutritional value inside the big fish. The student that possesses the largest fish is considered the most intelligent, receives the highest rewards and adoration and is viewed by their peers as well as their leaders as the most worthy.
