Discussions on Petty Bourgeois and Angry Youth
Yuanshan, Zhang; Lei, Rao; Liangyu, Feng; Gui, Peng
Chinese Education and Society, v44 n2-3 p110-127 Mar-Apr/May-Jun 2011
Petty bourgeois and angry youth are two large sets of contemporary Chinese youth. There is no doubt that most contemporary youth do not belong to either of these two sets. However, these two large sets are indeed very fashionable at this time, and it is easy to simply distinguish between them by means of two terms: the label "shuai dai" [stunningly handsome] for the petty bourgeois and "ku bi" [cool enough to kill] for the angry youth. This article features an extensive debate in a social science forum on the differences between Petty Bourgeois and Angry Youth, who are contrasted as two opposite types, roughly corresponding to those who pursue personal material benefits and those who pursue nationalistic aims in defense of China's rise.
