This paper presents the annual report of the Association for Children of New Jersey (ACNJ) for 2008. In 2008, ACNJ wrote a better ending for children by: (1) Advancing universal health care for children. ACNJ's assistant director chaired a state task force charged with getting more uninsured children enrolled in New Jersey's child health insurance program; (2) Advocating successfully for families struggling to pay their home heating bills and facing possible shutoff of their utilities. A widely circulated ACNJ report helped lay the groundwork for more state funding to an energy assistance program; (3) Building a broad base of support for expanding high-quality, state-supported preschool. ACNJ has created a strong advocacy base by educating and engaging stakeholders across the state on preschool expansion; (4) Spurring the state to improve and increase services to youth aging out of foster care through publication of two in-depth policy briefs on older youth in out-of-home care; (5) Providing leadership on the national as well as state level for improvements in early education. ACNJ's cutting-edge work on the preschool through 3rd grade continuum and early childhood system-building is giving direction to other states and national groups; (6) Promoting fairness to children in the state's poorest school districts through a "friend of the court" brief that ACNJ filed in the Abbott v. Burke case in 2008; (7) Raising awareness among policy makers and the public of how the foreclosure crisis is hurting families and neighborhoods in Newark. The "Newark Kids Count 2008" report included data, maps and narrative on foreclosures in the city; and (8) Providing outreach and education to the public and giving training, information and assistance to families, service providers and professionals. ACNJ's legal staff responded to more than 500 calls for assistance in 2008. [For the 2007 annual report, see ED519901.]
