Hands-on Learning with a Hands-off Approach for Professional Development
Ahlfeld, Kelly
School Library Monthly, v26 n6 p16-18 Feb 2010
Creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, initiative and self-direction--these are just some of the 21st-century skills teachers strive to develop in students. Meaningful projects, student-centered learning, differentiation--these are some of the strategies used to help students learn in the 21st century. But, how do these same concepts apply to teachers when they are adult learners? Does professional development honor the same skill goals? Is professional development providing teacher-centered, meaningful learning opportunities? This article will share an experiment with technology training undertaken over the past year in Mettawee Community School located in West Pawlet, Vermont. It will hopefully address some of these questions and help others think about learning paths as well as the role of school librarians in providing professional development for colleagues.
