North Carolina Journal of Speech and Drama [Thematic Issue: Empathy.]
Doll, Howard D.
North Carolina Journal of Speech and Drama, v11 n1 Entire Issue Fall 1977
The four articles in this journal explore various aspects of empathy and its application to oral interpretation of literature. The first article examines the concept of empathy, discusses measures of it, and includes an "accurate empathy exercise" and an empathy scale. The second article discusses the way in which the writings of Dylan Thomas reflect an empathic attitude toward people and nature and also illustrate empathy in poetic technique. The third article shows how interpreters of literature can empathize not only with emotional material in the world of the literary work, but also with the physical feel of the work's language; it then demonstrates how this method might be applied to Shakespeare's Sonnet 65. The final article adapts a psychoanalytic empathic technique for use in the oral interpretation of Keats'"Ode to Melancholy." (GW)
