Learning To Teach Reading: Setting the Research Agenda.
Roller, Cathy M., Ed.
The reading-focused reform environment of the new millennium is fertile ground for strengthening the link between research and public policy. This compilation of papers by presenters at International Reading Association's Reading Research 2000 Conference offers a compelling case for increased investment in teacher preparation for reading instruction. Chapters in the compilation are: (1) "Learning to Teach Reading: The Status of the Knowledge Base" (P.D. Pearson); (2) "The Interface of Standards, Teacher Preparation, and Research: Improving the Quality of Teachers" (D.S. Strickland); (3) "The IRA Excellence in Reading Teacher Preparation Commission's Report: Current Practices in Reading Teacher Education at the Undergraduate Level in the United States" (J.V. Hoffman and C.M. Roller); (4) "Transitions into Teaching: Learning to Teach Writing in Teacher Education and Beyond" (P.L. Grossman; S.W. Valencia; C. Thompson; S.D. Martin; N. Place; K. Evans); (5) "'I'm Still Figuring Out How to Do This Teaching Thing': A Cross-Site Analysis of Reading Preparation Programs on Beginning Teachers' Instructional Practices and Decisions" (A.S. Flint; C.H. Leland; B. Patterson; J. V. Hoffman; M.W. Sailors; M.A. Mast; L.C. Assaf); (6) "Social Reconstructionism as a Framework for Literacy Teacher Education" (R. Lalik and A. Potts); (7) "Teacher Education, Diversity, and Literacy" (K.H. Au and M.J. Maaka); (8) "What Do We Know about Effective Fourth-Grade Teachers and Their Classrooms?" (R.L. Allington and P.H. Johnston); (9) "Conducting a Design Experiment for Improving Early Literacy" (R.C. Calfee; K.A. Norman; G. Trainin; K.M. Wilson); (10) "The CIERA School Change Project: Translating Research on Effective Reading Instruction and School Reform into Practice in High-Poverty Elementary Schools" (B.M. Taylor and P.D.
