School Administrator Self-Perceived Leadership Styles Affect on Occupational Burnout
Maricle, William H.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
This study investigated the variables of self-perceived leadership styles and occupational burnout among school administrators in the states of Texas and Louisiana. The purpose of this study was to investigate if relationships exist between school administrator self-perceived leadership styles and occupational burnout. A review of the literature indicated that the Full Range of Leadership Model is the most widely used theory of leadership behavior (Kantem, Kaariainen, & Kyngas, 2009); and organizations, whose leadership utilizes this model, respond well to changes (Sosik & Jung, 2009). A purposive sample of 70 school administrators in the states of Texas and Louisiana chose to voluntarily participate in this study. A 71-item survey instrument was administered to each participant, which consisted of the 45-item Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire, the 22-item Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educator Survey, and four questions soliciting demographic information. Pearson r correlation coefficients were calculated between the variables, and the results indicated the existence of positive and negative relationships. However, no statistical significance was found between the leadership styles investigated and occupational burnout. Additional analysis of the data indicated that transformational leadership was the dominant leadership style practiced by school administrators.
