Prestige among Peasants: A Multidimensional Analysis of Preference Data
Seligson, Mitchell A.
American Journal of Sociology, 83, 3, 632-52, Nov 77
Examines the prestige hierarchy among 531 Costa Rican peasants. Data analysis indicates that peasants are most concerned with economic security and questions of legal tenure status. Variations in the prestige hierarchy based upon these factors are largely the result of remoteness from central locales. Concludes that research emphasizing the uniformity of prestige hierarchies needs to be reexamined. (Author/DB)
