Case 3. "Jiang Tao v. Chengdu Branch, People's People's Bank of China": Opinion by the People's Court in Wuhou District, Chengdu, Sichuan Province
Chinese Education and Society, v39 n4 p80-83 Jul-Aug 2006
This article presents the decision of the People's Court in Wuhou District, Chengdu, Sichuan Province on the Jiang Tao v. Chengdu Branch, People's People's Bank of China case. Jiang Tao, the plaintiff, claimed that the defendant Chengdu Branch placed an announcement in the "Chengdu Business Daily" to "recruit tellers for Chengdu Branch" on December 23, 2001. One of the requirements specified that male candidates should be 168 cm or higher and female candidates should be 155 cm or higher. The plaintiff believes that the rule specified by Chengdu Branch is discriminatory against candidates who are otherwise qualified except for the height requirement, including himself. Because the court found out that the height requirement imposed by the defendant has not caused any harm to the plaintiff or other applicants, the court has decided to dismiss the lawsuit filed by Jiang Tao.
