Inquiry and Living History, Part II
Coatney, Sharon; Smalley, Rachel
School Library Media Activities Monthly, v22 n5 p28-31 Jan 2006
In the first part of this article, the authors introduced the living history program. This yearly, weeklong program features living portrayals of famous people, which becomes a catalyst for teaching curricular standards, as well as providing the spark for inquiry. Successful implementation of this program requires providing teachers with considerable help and ideas, such as providing outlines and/or copies of the scripts that students will be hearing, and providing lesson plans and ideas. One of the most popular aids is to furnish teachers with annotated bibliographies of websites, audiovisuals, and books on the chosen historical figures. In this article, the second of this two-part series, the authors feature a living history script for a portrayal of Thomas Jefferson, and an annotated bibliography of good teaching and learning materials for students.
