The New Nation's Westward Expansion. Grade 5 Model Lesson for Standard 5.8. California History-Social Science Course Models.
Zachlod, Michelle, Ed.
California State Standard 5.8 is delineated in the following way: "Students trace the colonization, immigration, and settlement patterns of the American people from 1789 to the mid-1800s, with emphasis on the role of economic incentives, effects of the physical and political geography, and transportation systems." Students answer six questions aimed at illuminating the standard's topic. It discusses the significance of the topic; presentation and activities ("Beginning the Topic"; "Developing the Topic"; "Culminating the Topic"); provides nine focus questions and a sample vocabulary; suggests extended and correlated activities and a 24-item resource list; offers a resource list for other topics; and visual and performing arts resources. Appended are U.S. President Thomas Jefferson's instructions to Meriwether Lewis. Suggests 10 class periods for lesson implementation. (BT)
