Literacy for the New Millennium. Volume 4: Adult Literacy. Praeger Perspectives
Guzzetti, Barbara J., Ed.
Praeger
Living in an age of communication, literacy is an extremely integral part of our society. We are impacted by literature during our infancy, childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. "Literacy for the New Millennium" includes information from specialists in the field who discuss the influence of popular culture, media, and technology on literacy. Together, they offer a comprehensive outline of the study and practice of literacy in the United States. Volume four, "Adult Literacy," offers chapters on adult basic education, programs for English language learners, and workplace literacy. After a set preface and a preface to the volume, this book is organized into three parts. Part I, Issues and Trends in Adult Literacy, contains the following chapters: (1) Defining Adult Literacy (Laurie Elish-Piper); and (2) The World Touches the Classroom: Using "Anthropolicy" to Understand Political, Economic, and Social Effects on Adult Literacy Education (Alisa Belzer and Ralf St. Clair). Part II, Adult Literacy Instruction and Assessment, presents: (3) Teaching and Learning in Adult Basic Education (M. Cecil Smith); (4) Adult Literacy Education Programs (Hal Beder); (5) Adult ESL in the United States (John Strucker); and (6) Adult Learners in a Changing America (Irwin Kirsch, Marylou Lennon, and Claudia Tamassia). Part III, Adult Literacy beyond the Classroom, continues with: (7) Family Literacy and Community Literacy (Victoria Purcell-Gates); (8) Workplace Literacy (Larry Mikulecky); (9) Literacy in Later Life (Anne DiPardo); (10) Integrating Technology and Adult Literacy Education (David J. Rosen); and (11) Resources for Adult Literacy (Jackie Taylor). An index is also included. (Individual chapters contain references.) [For Volume 1, "Early Literacy," see ED498284.
