Inverting the Inverted Pyramid: A Conversation about the Use of Feminist Theories to Teach Journalism

Teaching is always challenging, and for some teachers who are feminists, teaching journalism is difficult. The tenets of good journalism--objectivity and neutrality--are often antithetical to their feminist values. Educators face the dilemma of how to incorporate feminist sensibilities into teaching journalism--a profession that strives for detachment and, at times, seems oblivious to its own position of power. At a professional meeting three years ago, the authors and their colleagues were talking casually about their teaching responsibilities and their students. During the course of that conversation, they began discussing the ways they teach journalism, and one of them made the comment--and the others agreed--that they cringe at some of the things they tell students: write with detachment, always use third-person, use the inverted pyramid to tell stories, take oneself out of the story. These initial discussions led them to think about how they might realistically change the way they teach journalism. In this article, three of the teachers who had participated in that informal discussion three years ago--all journalism professors--discuss how they have worked to incorporate feminist theories into their classroom teaching. Each of them shares thoughts about the contradictions they face. Some of their discussions are theoretical, but they offer some practical examples of how they have actually incorporated some tenets of feminism into their classrooms, and how those things have worked--or not.
