Spanish Federation of Popular Universities (FEUP)
Serrano, Isabel Garcia-Longoria
Convergence, v39 n2-3 p79-98 2006
This article features the Spanish Popular Universities, which are defined as "a project of cultural development that acts in the municipality, whose objective is to promote social participation, education, training, and culture in order to improve life quality" (Federation of Popular Education Universities, 2000). A century of history of Popular Universities in Spain makes them a necessary and experienced adult education model and one of the most outstanding and rich experiences regarding lifelong education and learning throughout life in the twenty-first century. Since its creation, FEUP has promoted and supported the consolidation process of the Popular Universities and has done crucial work by providing the project with common identity characteristics, overcoming the difficulties presented by certain junctures and contexts, and meeting new challenges. Here, the history of Spanish Popular Universities, functions and general objectives of FEUP, and FEUP's relationship with national and international networks and organizations are discussed.
